Use the Grand Staff Theory Worksheets to develop a strong foundation in Ear Training by playing “Write That Melody”.

Step #1: Divide the Grand Staff into 2 measures. Add a Time Signature (and a Key Signature if you wish). Identify and write the first note in each measure.

Step #2: The teacher plays a melody while the student listens. The student should not be looking at the piano. Play the melody again.

Step #3: Are you ready? Write That Melody! The student writes the melody, using correct pitch, note values and articulation.

Step #4: To check, the teacher plays the melody again. The student then plays the melody that they wrote on the Grand Staff Theory Worksheets. Listen! Is it the same melody?

UMT Tip: The teacher can write out their melody on the Ultimate Music Theory Whiteboard. Add a Sight Reading element – have the student play the teacher’s melody and then play their own melody. Is it the same melody?
