  • RCM Advanced Rudiments Exam – UMT Tip #1

Before beginning your exam, write out the Circle of Fifths. Write the order of flats and sharps. Write the Major keys on the outside of the circle and the relative minor keys on the inside of the circle.

BONUS UMT Tip
When naming intervals: Read the instructions carefully. On the exam, the interval question may ask you to invert the intervals OR to change the upper or lower notes of each interval enharmonically. An enharmonic note (enharmonic equivalent) has the same pitch using a different letter name.

When rewriting a melody at the same pitch in a different clef: Write the bar lines first before transposing the notes.

BONUS UMT Tip
When transposing to concert pitch: The French Horn and English Horn are both Horns. “Horns” has 5 letters. “Hint”: the instruments that are Horns go DOWN a Perfect 5th.

When writing a melodic minor scale using a Key Signature and using a center bar line, accidentals are not needed to lower the 6th and 7th notes. When NOT using a center bar line, accidentals WILL be needed in the descending scale.
