Watch and Listen to the Magical Sounds of the Glass Armonica

Glass Armonica
The Glass Armonica (“armonia” is the Italian word for harmony), also called the Glass Harmonica, was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761. The Glass Armonica is a spinning instrument made from glass bowls and played with wet fingertips. Watch William Zeitler play his arrangement of Tchaikowsky’s “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” from the Nutcracker (1892) on the Glass Armonica.

Enjoy the Story and the Music of Peter and the Wolf

Story Telling Through Music

Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev
Peter and the Wolf is a “fairy tale” for Symphony Orchestra and narrator, written in 1936 by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. Peter and the Wolf is a story about a boy named Peter, and his adventures in the meadow. The music helps tell the story as each character is represented by a specific instrument.

Watch the video and listen to the story of Peter and the Wolf. In your Level 1 Supplementary Workbook (pages 38 & 39), match each character in the story to the orchestral instrument that you hear in the music.

Enjoy Listening to Carnival of the Animals

Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns
Carnival of the Animals is a humorous musical parade of animals presented in a collection of 14 short pieces by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, written in 1985-86. The instruments mimic the sound and actions of the animals.

Watch the video and listen to the collection of short pieces that represent the Carnival of the Animals: No. 5 Elephant, No. 6 Kangaroos, No. 7 Aquarium and No. 13 the Swan. In your Level 1 Supplementary Workbook (page 40), answer the questions as you listen to the music.
