RCM Basic Rudiments Requirements – Exam Preparation
- RCM Basic Rudiments Requirements – Pitch
Grand Staff (Treble and Bass Clefs) Note names (up to five ledger lines below and above the Treble Clef and Bass Clef)
Accidentals (sharp, natural and flat)
Whole tones (whole steps), diatonic & chromatic semitones (half steps) and enharmonic equivalents
- RCM Basic Rudiments Requirements – Rhythm
Note and rest time values (whole, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth)
Dotted half notes, dotted quarter notes and dotted eighth notes
Triplets (quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenth notes)
Adding Time Signatures, bar lines and rests to a given line of music (which may include an anacrusis)
Simple Time Signatures

Scales in Major and minor keys up to and including four sharps and four flats
Major and minor (natural, harmonic and melodic) scales, ascending and descending
Key Signatures (Major and relative minor)
Tonic, Subdominant and Dominant scale degrees

Triads in Major & harmonic minor keys – including four sharps & four flats
Write or identify: Solid (blocked) in Root Position (close position only) beginning on the Tonic, Subdominant and Dominant notes (with or without a Key Signature)
Identify: Broken in Root Position (close position only) beginning on the Tonic, Subdominant and Dominant notes (with or without a Key Signature)

Intervals – Perfect, Major and minor
Write or identify: above a given note, all intervals up to and including an octave (no inversions), melodic or harmonic form (with or without a Key Signature)
Identify: below a given note, all intervals up to and including an octave (no inversions), melodic form only (with or without a Key Signature)

Recognition of Key Signatures up to and including four sharps and four flats
Identify the key (Major or minor) of a given melody with a Key Signature

Transpose a melody from one clef to another (Treble to Bass or Bass to Treble)
Rewrite a melody at the same pitch in the alternate clef
